Ystrad Mynach Hospital

The construction of the UK’s first ever 100% single-bed hospital covering 29,000 sq ft in a reclaimed flood plain just outside the town of Caerphilly. The entire structure, raised by one floor, leaves the ground floor as undercover parking.

The nature of the building meant a requirement for a large volume of air to pass through the envelope. The challenge was to achieve this whilst preventing the passage of rain and noise. As well as providing a practical solution, the design would need to be in harmony with the architect’s vision of the scheme.

Envelope specialist Prater Ltd. engaged Emtec to propose equipment that would achieve the demanding performance criteria set by the specification. The answer was a combination of acoustic louvres and weather louvres set into the fabric of the building facades.

Emtec successfully installed all elements safely and to programme. Above all, a positive working relationship with Prater Ltd. was maintained throughout the project. The success of this project has led to repeat contracts with Prater Ltd.
