5 Broadgate

5 Broadgate is a 13-storey groundscraper built for UBS in the heart of the City of London.

The building, designed to create a major visual impact, had to achieve a BREEAM “excellent” rating. Appointed by Mace, Emtec built the rooftop plantroom enclosures around the main building cores. In addition was the design, manufacture and installation of freestanding enclosures for five electrical switchrooms.

On the same project, German Façade contractor Seele required architectural and performance weather louvres for the building envelope. Emtec fabricated off-site, dispatched to Germany, and integrated by Seele into the curtain wall elements. The result: quality objectives achieved first time.

Our close involvement with the design team lead to other opportunities, and the innovation of some interesting additional features.

In particular, a security hut: designed, assembled and fully fitted at our factory. As a result, the finished item was ready for a simple crane lift into position on site. Benefits of this approach, for instance, include a reduction of risks to safety, minimal site build time, and monitoring of quality in a controlled environment.

In the latter stages of the project we worked closely with Make Architects to develop the design and installation of two large “art walls” in the adjacent Sun Street Passage, featuring bespoke aluminum fins with special pewter metal spray finish. Furthermore, sunset-colored backing panels and thousands of dimmable led feature lights enhanced the appearance. In total we provided 500m2 of bespoke art wall including all structural support steelwork and electrical wiring.
