Willow House
Emtec were appointed to design, supply and install an expanded aluminium mesh screening system at BUPA, Willow House, Staines, providing a continuous façade to conceal plant equipment. The scheme forms part of the wider plant enclosure strategy, delivering a clean architectural finish in line with the project design intent.
The installation comprises a 2.6m high screen extending approximately 35.8m in length, incorporating two 90-degree returns and integrating both single and double access doors within the façade. The system utilises Ash & Lacy expanded aluminium mesh panels, supported on a secondary framing system and complemented by integrated acoustic aluminium blanking panels positioned behind the mesh to provide noise attenuation.
A key challenge of the project was achieving a balance between architectural screening and acoustic performance, while accommodating access requirements and coordinating interfaces with adjacent curtain wall elements and the primary steel structure. Maintaining visual consistency of the mesh façade, particularly around door openings and corners, required careful detailing and alignment.
To address these challenges, Emtec developed a coordinated fixing strategy using aluminium mullions and bracketry, allowing efficient installation and on-site adjustability. The inclusion of acoustic backing panels enabled the system to contribute to noise control without compromising the aesthetic of the mesh façade.
Through early design coordination and a pragmatic installation approach, the project delivers an effective solution that combines architectural screening, acoustic performance and programme efficiency.
